I'm hoping some of you with more experience can help me. I have a 2005 17' 92" beam SmokerCraft Pro Angler with a Optimax 115 and it has cable steer. I was hoping this fall or winter to change the cable over to hydraulic steer if it can be done. If so where would I find the right equipment. Thanks

I did help a buddy install a hydraulic steering system on his bass boat a couple years ago - (it was a Sea Star system I think). Wasn't too tough a job, but it did take two of us the better part of an entire day. Only mistake we really made was hooking the hoses up backwards so that when we took it for a test drive, it turned opposite of what it should have!

Made it interesting gettnig it back on the trailer ... but all-in-all, its not a real tough conversion ... a little pricey however ($700 to $900).

SeaStar Steering Kit at Overton's - But shop around - I have seen these kits quite a bit cheaper at other outlets.

Mark,

Thanks, that exactly what I was looking for. Yeah not cheap but what is.   Like I sad not doing it till winter so that will give me some time to save for it. I can tell that the cable steer is starting to wearing out and I just didn't want to put cable steer back in. My buddy boat has hydraulic steering, mans that's nice and a lot easier to steer and easier on my bad neck.

You're right - it makes a big difference ... that is as long as you don't hook the hoses up backwards ... that REALLY was weird!! Turn left - go right ... I strongly suggest not making that mistake!

I wouldn't think that you guys got to far from the dock and that had to be a odd feeling when turning the wheel and it turns in the other way, I'm sure it was a short trip.

You bet it was! I backed him in and he pulled off the trailer and tied up to the dock. I parked - came back to teh boat, and as soon as we pulled away from the dock we knew something was wrong! Amazing how long it took to travel 20 feet back to the dock!!
