Best location for transducer mounting
I have just purchased a Sea Hunt BX24 like this one - where would be the best place to mount the 83/200 & the StructureScan transducers? I am thinking about the area along the angled surface between where the "pocket" ends and the hull turns horizontal for the "chine" - the area in the red circle.
Would there be better mounting locations? How about inside the "pocket" along the centerline - I'm not sure if its deep enough for the SS xducer or not.... if this is a good mounting location, should I mount with the bracket, or flush mount it flush, to the top of the hull - not sure I'm wild about putting that many holes in the hull.
thanks...

Sheldon Hatch showed where he mounted his LSS-1 on a Tundra 21 - looks like you have a similar area right ahead of your engine on this boat: http://www.thenextbite.com/node/15325
For the regular transducer I would go just to the right of your circled area where your bottom is flatter. Just make sure the bottom is flat for a ways coming into that spot. Turbulence is the biggest culprit in bad readings.
thanks Keith - saw that post just last night, and funny enough that is where we decided to install it when I got with my electronics guy yesterday afternoon.... it fits in there very nicely - he's going to mount it directly to the boat without the bracket.
We were wondering if that area will hold a bit of a air pocket and keep it from getting a bottom lock when on plane, but I guess it won't matter much as long as we get a good reading on the traditional xducer. I hope to have the boat on the water this coming weekend to see how it works out....
I was worried about going to far to the right with the regular xducer because even through it turns flat, it approaches a chine and the trim tabs which I thought woudl be even more turbulent... I asked him to mount the xducer in the area with one of those starboard mounting plates so that we have some room to play around if needed with some different location options....

Finally got out on the water this weekend with the new boat & StructureScan. I had the LSS transducer mounted right in the center of the "pocket" that is similar to those on the Tundra.
As expected, I don't get any LSS lock or image when the boat is on (or near) plane, but when I drop off plane it works well and I seem to have a clear view left & right . I've not played my yet with any of the tuning parms, but the StructureScan seemed to do a nice job "out of the box'. I do, however, need some tuning on the 2D sonar...
Now I just need to go back and look closely at JD's pics of the old bridge under Smith Mountain Lake and go verify it's there for myself to make sure he's not been doing some Photoshop work :)
Oh ye of little faith!
(A blind hog can find an acorn once and a while)
just kidding with you JD - I know its there - just want to see it pop up on my own unit.... amazing technology isn't it....
I'm just realizing that in looking at the pics of my transome vs. those of the Tundra, the "pocket" on mine closes back off, where as on the Tundra boat pics show its open the width of the boat. The net for me at the moment I guess is that I'm not going to be getting views out the full side directions as at least the top handfull (10?) degrees of the side beams will hit the boat. This is probably not a huge issue since I fish mostly deeper water for Striped bass - and probably explains some of what I thought was "clipping" in the images in side view when I had it out for a short time last weekend.
I'll play around with it some more this weekend and see if I can take some image snapshots. Downscan seemed to be working really well, and i was getting reasonable images (although likely clipped) on side-scan, so I don't know that it would be worth trying to move it back to the transom on the opposite side of the 83/200 xducer now.... I guess as with everything in boating its a set of tradeoffs ;)

if you search other postings, you will see other photo's and comments on postition to mount your transducer. where you have circled would not in be in "clean" water while running and you would most likley not get a good view of under your boat. the bottom 3rd of your transducer should be below the stepped area. also make sure where you mount the transducer will not hit anything on the trailer while loaded/off loading. i believe keith mentioned in another post that with the side scan you might only get one good picture side. i don't have any experience with that.
hope that helps
